Marcus Rodriguez is new Palo Verde College student trustee
Marcus Rodriguez, a second-year student at Palo Verde College, was sworn in as the new student trustee at last week’s meeting of the Palo Verde Community College District Board of Trustees.
As student trustee, Rodriguez represents PVC’s Associated Student Body.
Rodriguez moved to Blythe from Long Beach one and one-half years ago to live with his grandfather and enroll in college after his mother moved out of state. He signed up for classes at PVC beginning in the fall of 2007.
During his first year Rodriguez worked at Albertsons but found it was too difficult to attend school and go to work at the same time. He is scheduled to work in PVC’s Financial Aid office as a student peer counselor, but that is on hold until the California legislature and governor pass a state budget.
Rodriguez didn’t have a major in mind when he enrolled, but he became attracted to the field of dentistry. “While doing some research on the career, I came across the explorer program at the University of Southern California School of Dentistry and applied,” Rodriguez said, “and I was accepted for the two-week program from July 28 to Aug. 8.”
The program was filled with activities, Rodriguez said. Participants heard talks by different dentists as well as being able to “shadow” them as they worked in different areas of the clinic. They also got to practice with dental tools and make moldings of their own teeth as part of the activities.
Rodriguez came away from the program with a “Certificate of Participation in recognition of your outstanding involvement in the University of Southern California School of Dentistry Dental Explorer Program” and “The Most Enthusiastic Award in recognition of your hard work and dedication to the University of Southern California School of Dentistry Dental Explorer Program.”
Rodriguez now has his goals set. Once he obtains his Associate of Arts degree in liberal arts at PVC he plans to earn the Bachelor of Science degree he needs at either California State University Long Beach or USC before applying for dental school.
