Special to the Times
The Harlem Wizards basketball show team is coming to Blythe on April 23 for an evening of entertainment that includes games against Palo Verde College and Palo Verde High School all-star teams.
Show time begins at 6 p.m. in the new Palo Verde College gym, located at the main campus, One College Drive in Blythe. Seating is limited to 600. Admission is $5 a person, $2.50 for children under 12 years of age. Tickets are on sale in college business office at the Blythe campus and will be available at the door.
Irma Dagnino, PVC counselor, is assembling the college all-star team from among students, faculty and staff members. This team will play against the Wizards during the first half of the basketball game. The Palo Verde High School team will take on the Wizards for the second half.
The Harlem Wizards team was created in 1962 by Howie Davies in New York. Since that time, the team has played over 6,000 games in both the United States and abroad. According to a news release from the organization, the Wizards current winning streak “exceeds 2,800 games and miles of smiles.” Theatrics, tricks and alley-oops are all a part of the show.
Some of the greatest NBA and college players have been members of the team over the years since it was formed. Current Wizards include: Eric “Broadway” Jones, a former Harlem Globetrotter star and World Scholar Athlete; Arnold “A-Train” Bernard, a seven-year Globetrotter star who was featured in the NIKE Freestyle commercial; and “DP” David Paul, a CUNY (City University of New York) most valuable player.

PVC anniversary, ribbon-cutting draws good crowds
Palo Verde College’s 60th anniversary celebration drew good attendance at all the special events on March 14 and 15.
Dr. George Pennell, who became PVC’s first superintendent/president when it separated from Palo Verde Unified School District in 1972, travelled from Washington state to participate in at all the events. A number of PVC alumni from classes as early as 1949 were also present, some traveling from other parts of California and other states to participate.
Former PVC athletes were among an estimated 150 people who turned out for the Friday afternoon ribbon-cutting at the Clancy Osborne Physical Education Center. Special speaker was State Senator Denise Moreno Ducheny, who also presented a special certificate commemorating PVC’s 60th anniversary. Dr. James Hottois, PVC superintendent/president, was master of ceremonies and welcomed introduced some of the special guests in attendance. Mayor Robert Crain, a 1985 PVC graduate, also spoke as an alumnus as well as a city official, and Razsa Cruz, Associated Student Body vice president, spoke on behalf of PVC students.
Clancy Osborne talked about his days as a college and professional football player before becoming a teacher, coach and athletic director at Palo Verde College. Some of his former players at PVC and teammates at ASU were present for the ribbon-cutting ceremony.
The new gymnasium experienced its first basketball action after the ribbon-cutting ceremony when PVC students faced off against a team composed of faculty and staff members. After four eight-minute quarters, the students boasted a 43-19 win and fewer bruises and sore muscles than their opponents.
March 14 activities began with a morning golf tournament at Blythe Municipal Golf Course that attracted 37 players. First place went to a team that includes Rich and Dickie Soto, Jon Escher and Songie Melgarejo. Placing second was the team of Mark Nadeau, Bill Toburen, Gabe Vega and Bob Becker. Third place went to the team of Paul and Richard Stewart, Terry Canada and Don Burgeson.
Five teams were also “skins” winners in the golf tourney, which was played with a scramble format. The winners were the fivesome of Dr. Pennell, Doug Bigler, Mike Lefever, Richard Phipps and Quenton Hanson; the AEL Construction team of Patrick Fritch, Dennis Morgan, Derek Frahman and Lee Minor; the foursome of Joe Cota, Oscar Galvan, Eddie Rodriguez and Pete Garcia; the team of Mark Nadeau, Bill Toburen, Gabe Vega and Bob Becker; and the team of Paul and Richard Stewart, Terry Canada and Don Burgeson.

Middle school students visit Palo Verde Campus
Mr. Albanez’ middle school class visited Palo Verde College on Monday, March 3, in an effort to familiarize the students with the campus. The event was hosted by Steve LaVigne, Interim DSPS Coordinator, and his team. Mr. LaVigne’s goal was not just to show off the campus, but to give the students a glimpse of college life.
The morning started off with a tour of the campus facilities, beginning with Clancy Osborne Physical Education Complex. This made quite an impression on the students as they were among the first to be granted an exclusive tour of our newest building. Next, they stopped by the welding and automotive labs in the Technology Building to get a first-hand experience inside actual college classes. Finally, the tour concluded with a visit to the nursing lab and a discussion of nursing opportunities.
Once the tour came to a close, Mr. LaVigne had a special presentation prepared for the middle school students and served lunch. It proved to be an exceptional day for all those involved.
