Blythe artist featured at college library exhibit
Artwork by Blythe artist Jose Gaxiola is featured in an exhibit at Palo Verde College.
The exhibit is located in the college’s Harry A. Faull Library at the Blythe campus. It will remain on display through mid-November.
Theme for the paintings is “trees,” which are portrayed in a colorful, abstract form on eight large canvases.
A native Californian, Gaxiola was born and raised in Imperial County. After high school he began college at Imperial Valley College and continued his education at University of California, Santa Barbara.
Gaxiola describes himself as being “an artist my whole life, primarily painting, drawing and glazing.” Not all his adult life has been involved with art. He managed a “high end women’s contemporary clothing store” in Los Angeles and headed a public relations department that worked with all fashion publications.
About 15 years ago Gaxiola became involved with the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation’s Arts in Corrections program as a contract artist. He joined the program on a full-time basis 11 years ago as an Institution Artist Facilitator (IAF) at Chuckawalla Valley State prison.
Since moving to Blythe, Gaxiola also maintains a local studio.
Library hours are 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Friday. The library is located on the second floor of the John O. Crain College Services Building.

Completing the training were Kendra Allen, Cherii Cavers, Emily “Susie” Cobb, Mathew Kribbs, Joanne Leyden, Sarah Looper, Miranda Manzanarez, Guadalupe Rodriguez, Marieta Salazar, Jessica Valenzuela and Theresa Wolven.
Six of the students were recognized for maintaining perfect attendance for all three semesters. They were Sarah Looper, Miranda Manzanarez, Guadalupe Rodriguez, Marieta Salazar, Jessica Valenzuela and Theresa Wolven. Honorable mention went to Joanne Leyden, Mathew Kribbs, Susie Cobb and Cherii Cavers for having perfect attendance for two of the three semesters.
The ceremony began with a processional and recitation of the Nurse’s Prayer. Cheryl Bruno-Mofu, RN, main instructor for the traditional program, welcomed family members and friends of the students. Photo special to the Time/IVAN MURRAY
Blythe Auto Parts, local NAPA dealer, awarded $100 gift certificates to Palo Verde College Welding Technology students Troy Page and Nathan Mendez for winning this year’s “Bar BQ Build Off” contest held in conjunction with the Colorado River Fair. The winning barbecue was in the shape of a martini glass. Pictured are (from left) Bob Summers, Blythe Auto Parts owner; Page, Mendez and PVC welding instructor Joe Boire. Summers has sponsored the competition for five years. There were six entries this year, Boire said. Students submit designs for approval to Boire.
