Verification
FAFSA Verification at Palo Verde College
What is Verification?
Verification is a federal process required by the U.S. Department of Education to verify the information reported on FAFSA. At Palo Verde College (PVC), some students are selected for verification to ensure financial aid eligibility is determined correctly, or to confirm the student’s identity.
If selected, PVC will let you know through your student portal and also by email. You must complete the process before your financial aid can be determined.
Types of Verification at PVC
Verification requirements vary depending on your FAFSA responses. You may be asked to complete one or more of the following:
V1. Household Size and Income Verification
Based on your dependency status (dependent or independent) and the income reported on your FAFSA, you may be required to verify your household size and income.
What You Need to Do:
- Complete the required [Verification Form] listed in your Student Portal under your Financial Aid (FA) Checklist.
- Provide all requested information about your household.
- Submit any other documentation requested.
Possible Required Documents:
- Federal tax return transcripts
- W-2 forms
- Proof of non-filing (if applicable)
- Documentation of other income (untaxed income, benefits, etc.)
- Requirements vary by student. Always review your FA Checklist for specific instructions.
V4. Identity Verification
PVC requires identity verification for all students who attend remotely and are expected to receive federal aid.
Methods to Complete Identity Verification
- VeriScan(Preferred Method)
- Fastest and most convenient way.
- All students who are to verify their identity receive the link unless no valid number is available. Contact the office to request one if needed.
- Follow the instructions in the link to upload and verify your identity.
- If your link expires or is lost, contact the Financial Aid Office for a new link.
- In-Person Verification
- Available at the Blythe Campus or the Needles Center.
- Bring a valid, government-issued photo ID.
- Financial Aid staff will review your ID, make a copy, and confirm your identity.
- Notary (Mail-In Option)
- For students unable to complete VeriScan or visit in person.
Steps for Notary Identity Verification:
- Print a copy of the [V4 Identity Notary Verification Form] from your student portal or the [ Financial Aid Forms] webpage.
- Take the form and a valid photo ID to a licensed Notary Public.
- Sign the form in the presence of the notary.
- The notary will complete the acknowledgment section and apply their seal.
- Make a clear copy of your valid photo ID.
- Mail the notarized form and a copy of your ID to: Palo Verde College, Attn: Financial Aid Office, One College Drive, Blythe, CA 92225
Note: The notary option is the third method and should be used only if you cannot complete VeriScan or appear in person.
V5 Aggregate-Verification Requirements
You may be asked to verify all the information in V1 and V4:
- Identity
- Household size
- Income or tax information
All requested items must be completed before PVC can determine your financial aid eligibility.
Conflicting Information
PVC must resolve any conflicting information before awarding financial aid. Conflicting information occurs when data does not match your FAFSA, school records, or a previously submitted FAFSA.
Common Examples:
High School Graduation Status
- FAFSA indicates a different status than school records or earlier applications.
- You may have to submit:
- High school diploma
- High school transcripts
- Equivalent certification (GED/HiSET)
Name Mismatch
- Your name on the FAFSA differs from school records or Social Security Administration (SSA) records.
- Common reasons include marriage or divorce.
- Required actions may include:
- Updating your FAFSA
- Providing a copy of your Social Security card
Students must use the name on file with the SSA for FAFSA purposes.
FAFSA Rejections and Common Issues
Some FAFSA applications are rejected and must be corrected before aid eligibility can be determined.
Common Reasons for Rejected FAFSA Applications:
- Missing required contributor information
- Dependency status issues (incomplete or inconsistent answers)
- Missing signatures (student and/or parent)
- Conflicting or invalid Social Security information
What to Do:
- Log in to your FAFSA at StudentAid.gov
- Review and correct all errors
- Resubmit your application
- Monitor your email and Student Portal for updates

Financial Aid Verification — FAQ
Why was I selected for verification?
Selection is made by the federal processor or by the school to ensure accuracy of FAFSA data.
How will I know what to submit?
Check your Student Portal and FA Checklist regularly. You will also receive email notifications.
How long does verification take?
Processing times vary depending on how quickly documents are submitted and reviewed.
What happens if I don’t complete verification?
Your financial aid cannot be awarded or disbursed until verification is complete.
Can I submit documents late?
Deadlines apply. Late submissions may affect your eligibility for certain aid programs.
What is verification?
It is a federal review where we confirm that the information on your FAFSA is accurate before your financial aid is paid out. The U.S. Department of Education tells us which students to review.
Why was I selected? Did I do something wrong?
No. Selection does not mean you made a mistake or that anything is wrong. Many students are chosen each year, sometimes at random. It is a routine step.
Students who do not reside within the college’s local service area (Blythe or Needles) may be required to complete an identity verification process, which can include submitting government-issued identification and completing additional documentation as requested by the Financial Aid Office.
This process helps confirm that the student is the individual who applied for aid and is actively participating in their educational program, thereby reducing the risk of identity fraud and improper disbursement of federal funds.
How do I know if I was selected?
We will email you first. Then log in to your FA Checklist in your PVC Student Portal at https://prod-selfserv.paloverde.edu/Student/Account/Login to see exactly which tasks, forms, or documents are needed.
What is the difference between document verification and identity verification?
Document verification means we need forms confirming details like household size or income. Identity verification means we need to confirm that you are who you say you are. You might be asked to do one or both — your FA Checklist will tell you.
What if my information does not match school records (conflicting information)?
Sometimes the details on your FAFSA do not match your other records. A common example is a high school completion status that differs from what Admissions has on file or from a previous year’s FAFSA. This is not verification, but we are required to clear it up before we can release your aid. If it applies to you, we will reach out through your FA Checklist or by email and ask for a document or a short explanation to resolve it.
I got a text and an email about “Veriscan”. Is that really from the college?
Yes. Veriscan is the secure service Palo Verde College uses for remote identity verification. If you were asked to verify your identity, expect a text message and an email with a link. Follow the instructions to finish in a few minutes. If you are ever unsure whether a message is genuine, contact the Financial Aid Office before clicking — we are happy to confirm.
How does Veriscan work?
You will open the link from your text or email, then use your phone to take a photo of your government-issued photo ID and a quick photo of yourself. The system confirms your identity securely. It is designed to be fast and done from anywhere.
What if I would rather not verify online, or I cannot complete Veriscan?
No problem — you have two other options:
- In person: Bring your valid, unexpired photo ID to the Financial Aid Office.
- By mail: Mail a notarized “Notary Acknowledgement” Form (provided by the Notary) plus a clear copy of your valid, unexpired photo ID to the office.
Does PVC offer video identity verification?
No. Palo Verde College does not use video (live camera call) verification. Please verify online with Veriscan, in person, or by mail.
What counts as an acceptable photo ID?
A current, government-issued photo ID that is not expired — for example, a driver’s license, state ID card, U.S. passport or passport card, or permanent resident card.
Where do I mail my documents?
Mail your notarized statement and ID copy to the Financial Aid Office at Palo Verde College, Attn: Financial Aid Office, One College Drive, Blythe, CA 92225.
What is the deadline?
For the 2026–27 award year, verification must be completed by the “File Complete Date” listed on the Pell Grant Disbursement Schedule: PELL Grant Disbursement Schedule. To receive federal aid, students must submit their FAFSA while actively attending and have a completed financial aid file before the last day of classes to be eligible for disbursement. Disbursements may be made up to the federal deadline (generally mid-September) or within 120 days of the student’s last date of attendance, whichever occurs first. Submitting all required documentation as early as possible is strongly recommended.
Per federal regulations, students are not eligible for aid if they submit a FAFSA after they are no longer enrolled.
For example, if a student attends the fall semester but submits their FAFSA in the spring and does not enroll for spring, they would not be eligible. The FAFSA must be submitted during the period of enrollment (in this case, during the fall semester or earlier).
